Trivia

Though Florez is best known for his operatic voice, he started out his career wanting to sing popular music. (He's said to have a remarkable facility with the work of Elvis Presley, oddly enough.) Though he eventually abandoned this dream when his operatic talents became clear, he does occasionally still sing popular music publicly. For instance, in 2005 at the Live 8 concert in Berlin, he performed "You'll Never Walk Alone," from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel.

Juan Diego Florez's father, Ruben Florez, was himself a critically acclaimed guitarist. He trained young Juan Diego's voice, and Juan Diego found himself frequently filling in for singers at his mother's pub, here he demonstrated a wide variety of vocal styles and showed a formidable natural talent.

Florez attended the National Music Conservatory in Lima and soon became an accomplished classical singer. He traveled and studied with several notable vocal teachers, before he made his first big break in Milan when he stepped in to perform as an understudy for leading tenor Bruce Ford in Matilde di Shabran. Ever since then, he's been touring broadly in many notable productions and for concerts. In 2001 he signed to the Decca music label and began releasing albums of his singing.

While his tenor is the main attraction nearly anywhere he appears, he often performs with other notable musicians. Depending on the given engagement, you may see performers like Italian-American pianist Vincenzo Scalera, Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, and South African soprano Pretty Yende.

While he can't match Florez's volume, Palacio's technique is peerless, and accordingly he's taken up a career as a vocal coach to Florez and other luminaries.
