On the road with Jose James
"I want people to hit the dance floor," says versatile performer Jose James. The American is often referred to as a jazz singer for the hip-hop generation. Why Billie Holiday was Jose's 'musical mother'
At the age of three, a young Jose James was looking at the pictures in his mother's record collection. As he told the BBC in 2015, that of Billie Holiday caught his eye. When he heard her music, he says he felt an immediate connection to her, particularly her classic tearjerker God Bless the Child. "Her music just floated through the house," he said. He refers to her as his 'musical mother'. Years later, on the 100th anniversary of her birth, Jose recorded nine of her songs as a tribute on an album entitled Yesterday I Had the Blues. Born in 1978 and based in New York, Jose James's first album, The Dreamer, was praised for its blend of jazz, electronic, soul and pop. As well as Billie Holiday, James pays tribute to the influence on his work of Marvin Gaye and John Coltrane and admires the crossover approach of Gil Scott-Heron. Busy blend of music styles from Jose James
The success of The Dreamer opened the door for Jose James to tour the world. He performed on his own and with other artists, including the Junior Mance Trio, Chico Hamilton, McCoy Tyner and Nicola Conte. While playing gigs in venues all the way from Japan to Brazil to London's Festival Hall and Russia (including The Hermitage, St Petersburg), Jose got busy writing his own blend of music while travelling. Subsequent albums include Blackmagic, No Beginning, No End, While You Were Sleeping and Love in a Time of Madness. He was influenced by listening to bands such as Nirvana and Radiohead, as well as contemporaries such as Frank Ocean, James Blake and Kanye West. His work also includes elements of the spoken word, African folk and American gospel music. To mark the 80th birthday of Bill Withers, the man who wrote the wonderful Lean On Me, Jose James took a handpicked band on a world tour to play his songs.
