Jane's Addiction Biography - See Perry Farrell's Iconic Rock Outfit Live
Despite only having four albums in their arsenal, Jane's Addiction are celebrated as one of the most important bands in rock 'n' roll. Founded by Perry Farrell (a stage name and play on the word 'peripheral') and bassist Eric Avery, the rebellious Los Angeles alternative outfit are cited as being the major precursor to a variety of alternative genres, inspiring a plethora of acts from funk metal maharishis Red Hot Chili Peppers and nu metal titans Korn.
Taking inspiration from L.A.'s deeply rooted glam metal scene, the band were originally a goth act, but created a highly bespoke sound by adding elements of funk and psychedelia into the mix. Their debut LP Nothing's Shocking was released in 1988, and is counted as one of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Sophomore record Ritual de lo Habitual (1990) helped the band acquire a mammoth cult fan base, and it eventually went double platinum in the US of the back of stellar singles 'Been Caught Stealing' and 'Stop!'.
Creative disagreements brought the group to a standstill shortly after their second record, and Farrell created Lollapalooza Festival as a farewell tour for fans. His legacy is clearly cemented - it's now one of the biggest touring festivals in the world. After performing a handful of reunion tours, the band released third album Strays in 2003, their first new LP for 13 years. Single 'Just Because' earned the band a first Grammy nomination, and introduced their music to a whole new generation of music lovers. Despite countless lineup changes and hiatuses, JA are still regarded as one of the most important innovators in alternative music.
