Eric Clapton: Slowhand to play BST in 2018
Eric Clapton is someone who needs no introduction, but since we've got 400 words to find, here goes: one of the most successful and influential rock and blues guitarists of all time, few musicians can claim to match the success of Eric Clapton.
He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of The Yardbirds and Cream; ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"; and has sold over 130 million records in a career now spanning 55 years. He has won 18 Grammy Awards, the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and, in 2004, was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. "Clapton is God" as the raft of 1960s graffiti scrawled across London declared.
Now 72, Slowhand shows no signs of slowing down. Clapton is the latest artist to be announced as a headliner for Hyde Park's BST festival in July, where he will be supported by fellow acclaimed guitarist Carlos Santana and Steve Winwood. His appearance comes 48 years after he performed to 120,000 fans at Hyde Park as part of super group Blind Faith.
Clapton said: "I have happy memories of performing in Hyde Park in the past and I’m really looking forward to playing there again – the whole atmosphere is very special."
Also announced for the series of BST dates next summer are former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters, singer Michael Buble and pop star Bruno Mars. Ensure you're there to watch one of the finest guitarists of all time by getting your Eric Clapton tickets at StubHub today.
Eric Clapton: a brief history for the uninitiated
Before rising to fame as a solo artist, Clapton built his name with the likes of legendary acts including The Yardbirds, Cream, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Blind Faith. Following his debut release in 1970, he broke into the top 40 with "After Midnight", before making his adoring fans wait another four years for his second record, which was released on the album 461 Ocean Boulevard. The iconic "I Shot the Sherriff" helped to spur the album on, and was followed by the release of There's One in Every Crowd and No Reason to Cry.
His unparalleled career has seen him work alongside some of the greatest names in music, with icons such as Bob Dylan, Elton John and the great George Harrison on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".
