There has been Minor League Baseball in Jacksonville, Fla. since 1977. The Jacksonville Suns spent their first seven seasons as an affiliate for the Kansas City Royals before becoming the Double-A affiliate for the Montreal Expos. The Expos are now defunct, but baseball has never left Jacksonville. After an unsuccessful four seasons as an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, the team was picked up by the Detroit Tigers. In six seasons as a part of Detroit's organization, the Suns were a staple in the postseason and won the Southern League Championship in 1996. In 2001, the Suns became an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers where they would win another two Southern League titles before being taken over by the Miami Marlins in 2009. The switch to the Marlins saw an immediate uptick in results as the team won back-to-back league championships in 2009 and 2010 and then won another in 2014.[5] The team underwent a re-branding in 2017 and was named the Jumbo Shrimp.
