J. Cole: American star looking to break UK and European charts

Jermaine Cole grew up in a tough area of North Carolina and was raised on an eclectic musical diet of hip-hop, rock and folk. He started rapping at an early age, while excelling at school; qualifying for a college scholarship. While attending St John's University in New York he camped outside hip-hop mogul Jay Z's office every day until the iconic artist accepted his demo tape.

The burgeoning rapper's lyrical talent was eventually recognised, and he was soon signed to the legendary Roc Nation label, leading to a spot on 2009's Blueprint 3 LP on the track "A Star Is Born". A year later, the young rapper released his own platinum selling single "Work Out" before his debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011) went gold after selling almost 300,000 copies in its first week. A prolific collaborator, J. Cole has also worked with the likes of Janet Jackson, Beyonce and Childish Gambino. 

His next two releases – 2013's Born Sinner and 2014's Forest Hills Drive – were well-received by critics, while both certified platinum in the US. The latter earned J. Cole his first Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album and his fourth studio album 4 Your Eyez Only was certified platinum in April 2017. Buy J.
