Il Divo: masters of their unique art

The brainchild of Simon Cowell, the operatic pop group allegedly first came to the forefront of the music mogul's mind while listening to Andrea Bocelli's "Con Te Partiro" on The Sopranos. The idea became fixed in the forefront of his thoughts after a similar group – G4 – appeared on the 2004 series of The X Factor and it became increasingly apparent that classical vocal music was gaining popularity in the world of mainstream music.

After spending two years auditioning for a "Three Tenors" style group, Cowell settled on American tenor David Miller, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler and French pop singer Sebastien Izambard. Although it is unclear how the group's name came about, "Il Divo" is translated from Italian as "divine performer."

Remarkably, their eponymous debut album shot to number one in thirteen countries after its release in 2005, and has since sold more than five million copies across the globe. However, it was the sophomore effort Ancora that brought the group mainstream success, rocketing to the number one spot in both the UK and Australian charts within a week of release. Since then the group have gone on to dominate the classical-pop crossover scene having scored multiple top five albums in the UK and beyond.
