The Hofesh Shechter Company performs numerous operas and ballets during their show season. "Orphée et Eurydice" is one such show. This play centres around Orphée (or Orfeo or Orpheus, depending on the translation) who is grieving the loss of his wife, Eurydice. Amor (also known as Cupid) appears to the grieving Orphée and tells him that he will be able to go down to the underworld to retrieve his wife. There is, however, one condition Amor places on the journey: Orphée is not allowed to look at Eurydice until they have returned to Earth from the underworld. Orphée agrees and makes the journey to the underworld to find his wife.
The Hofesh Shechter Company will be performing "Orphée et Eurydice" in several engagements at the Royal Opera in London, England. Additional shows will include "Barbarians" at the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London and the Brighton Dome in Brighton, and then the show heads across the Atlantic to the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. The company will also perform "Sun" at the Lavant Seine in Colombes, France, as well as in Montréal, Canada. "Political Mother" will be performed at the Théâtre-Sénart in Lieusant, France, and the O2 Academy Brixton in London, England.
Hofesh Shechter hails from Jerusalem, Israel. He did not begin to pursue his interest in dance until he was 12 years old, which is late by professional dancing standards. However, his natural talent was evident from the beginning and he joined the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, Israel, at the age of 20. His love of dance was well-accompanied by his passion for music. Shechter studied music and percussion, and even played in a rock band for a while. Along with Colette Hansford and Helen Shute, Shechter formed the Hofesh Shechter Company in 2008. The company has since expanded under Shechter's leadership, and tours all over the world performing various original works and interpretations of classic pieces.
The Hofesh Shechter Company is a large dance company, made up of 14 dancers and led by Hofesh Shechter himself. Paula Alonso Gomez is one of the newest members of the company and has been an integral part of the group since the summer of 2014. She originally hails from Madrid and has been dancing professionally since 2003. Maëva Berthelot, on the other hand, has been with the company since the beginning of 2010. Other Hofesh Shechter Company members include Sam Coren, Chien-Ming Chang, Winifred Burnet-Smith, Hannah Shepherd and Frédéric Despierre.
The main show that the Hofesh Shechter Company is involved in, "Orphée et Eurydice," is originally a Greek myth. This myth has been retold countless times, most noticeably by Ovid, Virgil, and Apollonius of Rhodes.
The production of "Orphée et Eurydice" is being produced by the Royal Opera House Covent Garden Foundation.
