Enjoy the unique story of Heathers
Cult film Heathers won much critical acclaim when it was released in 1989, yet it remained somewhat under the radar as far as the box office was concerned. Taking a unique approach to the high school drama, it follows Veronica (played by Winona Ryder) who falls in with the popular clique at school: a group of three girls all called Heather. As a love interest develops between her and unusual new student JD, Veronica begins to question the notion of 'popularity' and becomes embroiled in a dark plot of murders, suicides and a plan to blow up the school. Using humour to deal with fundamentally serious issues, the story of Heathers the Musical remains very close to that of the film and is especially pertinent in the 21st century in which bullying, teenage suicides and school shootings are all-too-present in society. While the ending of Heathers is positive, it touches on many issues that can be hard to talk about - and even harder to translate into musical form. Yet the transition from screen to stage has been made with great sensitivity, adding a new dynamic twist to this unique story. See it for yourself with tickets to Heathers, a truly successful musical reimagining.
Heathers the Musical: an acclaimed adaptation
The musical of Heathers was written by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy and developed in Los Angeles before being taken off-Broadway in 2014. An Australian production followed, before the show was moved to the UK with a workshop, off-West End and finally a West End engagement. The 2018 West End Heathers starred Carrie Hope Fletcher in the role made famous by Winona Ryder and received a very good critical reception for its talented cast and several adapted songs. Composer O'Keefe had also worked on the acclaimed screen-to-stage adaptation of Legally Blonde, which is one of a host of films such as 42nd Street, Dirty Dancing and Mary Poppins that have proved equally - if not more - successful on stage than they were in the box office.
