This Oklahoma native was born in 1962 and enjoyed a childhood of fun, learning to play the banjo at an early age and entertaining his family in weekly talent contests. He made his first foray into the wider music world by releasing his stunning self-titled album in 1989 - it became an instant hit, getting to Number Two in the US country album chart. However, he wasn't confined to the world of country music and easily crossed over into more commercial spheres, with audiences clamouring to see him perform live. In the 1990s, he became one of the most popular figures in music, destroying gig attendance records and developing an ever-expanding fan following.
To date he has sold nearly 69 million albums, meaning he's sold more albums than The Beatles in the USA. Six of his albums have reached diamond status in the US, including No Fences, Ropin' the Wind and Sevens. In 2001 he chose to step away from music and concentrate on his family, then returned properly in 2009 before being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2012.
