Guaranteed sunshine, guaranteed superstars

Staged at Passeio Marítimo de Algés, a riverside location in the Portuguese parish of Algés, the NOS Alive festival debuted on the festival circuit in 2007. The Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, and Pearl Jam served as headliners, while The White Stripes, The Used, and Beastie Boys all performed in Portugal for the first time at the three-day event. The relatively low ticket prices and guaranteed sunshine inspired several publications to declare the festival as one of the best in Europe, and a year later it attracted two bona fide legends in the shape of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. In 2009, a dance-oriented third stage was added to the festival alongside the existing Optimus and Super Bock stages, while in 2011, it expanded from three to four days. 55,000 festivalgoers attended the 2012 event in which Radiohead headlined, and in 2014, its name was changed from Optimus Alive to NOS Alive. Homegrown and international talent

NOS Alive festival has continued to attract some of the biggest names in pop, indie, rock, R&B, hip-hop and electronica since its rebranding. Headliners have included Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, Disclosure, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Arcade Fire, Muse, The Weeknd, Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode, Queens of the Stone Age and MGMT. The festival has also added several more stages over the years, including a comedy stage which has welcomed the likes of John Cooper Clarke and Daniel Sloss, and EDP Fado Café and Coreto by Arruada, both of which are designed to showcase the best in both traditional and contemporary Portuguese music, including Mário Pacheco, Mai Kino and Carminho. Inaugural performers The Smashing Pumpkins returned to the top of the bill in 2019, where they were joined by The Cure, Bon Iver, Tash Sultana, Vampire Weekend, Thom Yorke, Cut Copy, Jorja Smith, Weezer, and Sharon Van Etten.
