Dropkick Murphys Biography - All for the Shamrock
Formed in 1995, these uncompromising Bostonians have reached heights of international stardom. Playing in the basement of a friend's barbershop and local bars during their formative years, the band soon found a niche following and began to put out EPs. Signing to the independent label Hellcat Records in 1998, they released their full-length debut Do or Die, produced by Rancid frontman Lars Fredriksen. Soon after its release, founding member and lead singer McColgan left the group and was replaced by former Bruisers vocalist Al Barr for the band's sophomore album The Gang's All Here.
Adding a mandolin and an extra set of bagpipes to the lineup, the group grew from a quintet to a seven-piece orchestra in the mid-2000s. It was also during this time that their combination of Irish folk and British punk fully blossomed. Releasing a cover of the Red Sox anthem 'Tessie' earned them the love of local baseball fans; it wasn't long until they were invited to perform the single on the hallowed grounds of Boston's Fenway Park. In 2005 they released The Warrior's Code, spawning perhaps their biggest hit single, 'I'm Shipping Up to Boston', which was featured in Martin Scorsese's award-winning film The Departed.
