An iconic theatre venue with a story to tell

The Darlington Hippodrome was built by Rino Pepi, an Italian artist and entrepreneur who was born in Tuscany and came to London after falling in love with a half-Irish, half-Italian countess. After being a performer for several years, he started running and building theatres of his own, one of which was the Darlington Hippodrome, inaugurated in 1907. 4,000 people showed up on the first day over two different sessions to watch a music hall show and comedian Miss Marie Loftus. The venue’s name was inspired by the Greek hippodromes, and the architect who was responsible for the project, William Hope, had worked on several other large venues such as the Stockton Hippodrome and the Grand Opera House in Middlesbrough. Over the years the theatre has hosted a number of notable entertainers, such as dancer Mademoiselle Lumiere and the Three Phydoras, who made everyone laugh with their comedy. It has continued to host a large variety of events, with past performances including theatre such as Kay Mellor's Band of Gold, comedy nights with performers such as Chris Ramsey, as well as music-themed nights with tribute bands, musicals and singers like Jason Donovan.
