Chic Biography - Bringing the World to the Dancefloor
Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards first happened on each other in 1970 when both were trying to find work as jazz musicians fresh out of high school. After spending seven years experimenting with numerous bands the pair decided to strike out on their own and form Chic, enlisting the help of vocalist Norma Jean Wright and her friend Luci Martin. Releasing their debut single 'Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)', they were soon in the Top 10 and making headlines on both sides of the Atlantic.
Their real breakthrough came with their sophomore album C'est Chic, which spawned the insatiably catchy chart topping disco anthem 'Le Freak'. Selling over six million copies, the single became their label's biggest selling single of all time. A year later the group released 'Good Times' and cemented their status as disco icons, with the likes of Queen and, more recently, Daft Punk taking inspiration from the track. Having helped produce albums for everyone from Diana Ross to Debbie Harry, this funk-filled group have been firmly placed amongst some of music's biggest inspirers. Their soulful sounds continue to permeate into pop music even today, with countless artists having sampled their tracks in their own songs.
