Anyone who was fortunate enough to properly appreciate music during the golden era of Southern rap knows just how influential, innovative, and downright fun it was to experience hip-hop during this time. It was an era when rap was no longer dominated by New York-based artists and hip-hop purists, who were convinced that if it didn't come from one of the five Burroughs, it wasn't worth listening to.

Between roughly 1999 and 2004, Southern rap experienced a boom, both underground and commercially. You were hard pressed to turn on the radio at any given time and not near the 808s of a hot UGK single, or the wild and rambunctious hooks of a Lil' Jon, Ludacris or Outkast track. The South was having a party and the whole world was invited. The genre has long since fizzled out, but a renaissance of sorts has begun, with Mississippi-born rapper Big K.R.I.T. leading the charge to bring it back.

Big K.R.I.T. may be an aficionado in a genre that's specific to the Southern United States, but that doesn't mean he stays in that region all the time. Trivia

Born Justin Scott, Big K.R.I.T. was tapped by the likes of fellow rappers Curren$y and Smoke DZA to perform on the iconic Smoker's Club Tour in 2010. This was considered a major honor for a rapper who had yet to release a studio album. In 2013, K.R.I.T. and singer Ashthon Jones collaborated on the song "Mayday" from the Lecrae album Gravity. The album then went on to win Best Gospel Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Big K.R.I.T., which stands for "King Remembered in Time," has firm roots planted in the Southern rap industry and is an accomplished producer. Big K.R.I.T.'s mixtape career was instrumental in transitioning him from a little-known Southern rapper to a full-blown force to be reckoned with. Not too long after the release of the K.R.I.T. Wuz Here mixtape, Def Jam Records decided to sign him and his career took off. The success from this mixtape also landed him a spot on XXL Magazine's coveted 2011 Top Freshmen of the Year list, which showcased the hottest up-and-coming rappers and musicians in the hip-hop industry.

Hit Albums

Big K.R.I.T. made a name for himself with the handful of mixtapes he released between 2005 and 2010, but the album that put him on the radar of artists like Outkast, UGK, T.I., and Wiz Khalifa was his first studio album, Live From the Underground, in June 2012. After the album gained high praise from major music publications like Pitchfork and XXL Magazine, he went on tour to promote the record with Texas rapper Slim Thug.
