Andrew Lloyd Webber: the most commercially successful composer in history
Fourteen Ivor Novello Awards; seven Tonys; seven Olivier Awards; a Golden Globe; a Brit Award; three Grammys (as well as the Grammy Legend Award); a knighthood (followed by a peerage from Queen Elizabeth II for services to Music); an Academy Award; a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; and the 2008 Classic Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music – few artists in the history of any genre of music have experienced anything close to the success of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
One of the most gifted and prolific musicians of all time, he has composed 13 musicals, two film scores and is credited with revitalising British and American musical theatre in the late 20th century with his eclectic rock-based works. What's more, several of his songs have been recorded outside of their parent musicals, including: "The Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You" from The Phantom of the Opera; "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar; "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita; "Any Dream Will Do" from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat; and "Memory" from Cats.
An equally savvy businessman, Lloyd Webber's company – the Really Useful Group – is one of the largest theatre operators in London and has helped him to amass a personal fortune of over £700m; making him one of the wealthiest and most influential individuals in British society. He is also involved in a number of charitable activities, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Prostate Cancer UK and War Child, while in 1992 he set up the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation which supports the arts, culture and heritage in the UK.
In June 2018, Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced that he is to play a headline date at the Live At Chelsea Concert Series.
