American Authors: The Best Show of Your Life
American Authors is an alt-rock band from Bushwick that has burst onto the music scene with a positive, upbeat style that touches the soul. No one can help dancing to their hits "Believer" and "Best Day of My Life" from their debut album, Oh, What a Life. Musicians, storytellers and friends -- the guys from American Authors are on a mission to make you appreciate what you have, and to have a good time while you're doing it.
The American Authors tour hits the intimate space King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, Scotland this fall. They'll continue to bring their energetic anthems throughout the United Kingdom to Rescue Rooms in Nottingham, followed by a stop at the night club, Heaven, in London. Next it's Manchester Academy, finishing up at Brudenell Social Club in Leeds before taking the rest of Europe by storm.
Originally named The Blue Pages, the band changed their name to American Authors in 2012. Vocalist Zac Barnett explained, "We're the authors of our lives, creating music from what we've lived, from what we hope for, from what we feel." Their name reflects their belief that they are storytellers first and their lyrics reflect the ups and downs that everyone goes through but, ultimately, provide a positive outlook on life. The band's name is also a nod to the eclectic tastes of each member and the idea that "American" is not just one point of view, but rather, a mix of influences. Every member is from a different part of the country -- Florida, Texas, Minnesota and New Jersey.
Hailing from all over America, band members Zachary Barnett (lead singer), James Adam Shelley (guitarist), Dave Rublin (bassist) and Matt Sanchez (drummer) met while attending Berklee College of Music. Tired of travelling back and forth from Boston to New York, the foursome eventually dropped out and moved to the Bushwick area of Brooklyn to start their band. The individual styles each of them brings to the group create a unique blend of alt-rock, pop, harmonies and fun lyrics. They can be goofy or serious and their laid-back attitudes shine through all of their songs.
Music producers Shep Goodman and Aaron Accetta caught one of their shows and eventually signed them to their production company, Dirty Canvas. In 2010, they released their single "Run Back Home" on iTunes and thanks to social media, they quickly built a devoted following. Next came the hit, "Believer," which made its way to Sirius XM's Alt Nation radio. The DJs and listeners embraced both the song and the band so rapidly that "Believer" landed on the Alt 18 Countdown.
American Authors released their self-titled debut EP in August 2013, and the following year released their first full album, Oh What a Life in March 2014. Their songs have been featured in commercials for Lowe's and Hyundai, as well as in the film "Delivery Man", the opening sequence for ESPN's 2013 World Series of Poker coverage and the television show, "The Vampire Diaries."
