A long tough road to the Bundesliga

1. FC Union Berlin took a long time to even break into unified German professional football, let alone make it into the ranks of the Bundesliga. For many years, they were denied a professional licence, simply due to financial constraints, and ended up languishing in the German Amateur League, where they cleaned up most other opposition. Yet they were still denied professional status until their fans stepped in with a blood donation for cash campaign that saw the team survive yet another year. However, they were narrowly outplayed by VFL Osnabruck and could not gain 2. Bundesliga status. Once admitted, they continued to struggle, however they showed a flair for knock-out cups: they did well in the German Cup and qualified for Europe, where they lost to Bulgaria's Litex Lovech. The club finally made the Bundesliga in 2019, the culmination of an epic trek, when they won the promotion-relegation series against VfB Stuttgart.
