The band formed following the breakup of the former group Smith Westerns, which consisted of Max Kakacek and Julien Erlich, roommates in a small Chicago apartment who enjoyed passing their time with music and jam sessions. Whitney formed with members Kakacek (guitarist), Ehrlich (drummer), Josiah Marshall, Will Miller, Malcolm Brown, Print Chouteau and Charles Glanders. They were soon recording their first demos in a Wisconsin cabin and, after signing with the Secretly Canadian label, the band released their first album, "Light Upon The Lake", in 2016. The record proved to be a great commercial success, reaching Number 23 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, Number 16 on the Alternative Albums chart, Number 33 on The Guardian’s Best Albums of 2016, and Number 42 on NME’s Albums of the Year.
