More About the London Coliseum - Revolving Stages and High Jumps

Built in the early 20th century for Sir Oswald Stoll, the opera house was created to be a "people's palace", providing audiences with a mixture of music hall entertainment and variety theatre. Designed by famous theatre architect Frank Matcham, it features the widest proscenium arch and one of the largest theatre capacities in the capital, seating 2,359 patrons per show. A canteen for Air Raid Patrol workers during World War II, it became the setting for the latest American musicals after the war before turning into a cinema in the early '60s. Grade II-listed by English Heritage in 1960, the building underwent a complete renovation at the turn of the millennium, retaining its aesthetic splendour but offering top class, modern facilities for its visitors.
