Trivia

Hue and Cry have recorded with Jools Holland for his BBC Radio 2 program, and played with James Taylor and his Fantasy Funk Band for the BBC 6 Music 10th Anniversary Special. Their television appearances include a spot on E4's Celebrity Big Brother.

In 2014, Hue and Cry released "Remote: Major to Minor" which re-imagines their 1988 release Remote. Reworking their existing songs was a big challenge for the duo, but they eventually found themselves doing chord substitutions to change the emotional resonance of their songs.They knew that this would surprise many of their fans, but they took the risk in the spirit of trying something new.

Band

The band was formed in the early 1980s by two Scottish brothers, multi-instrumentalist Greg Kane, and vocalist Pat Kane. Many people call their music sophisti-pop, a genre that combines influences from soft rock, jazz, new wave and blue-eyed soul. They call it indie-jazz. Hue and Cry's songs feature soulful vocals, lots of synth. The band was active from the early 1980s until able 1999, releasing many successful records. After a hiatus in the early 2000s, they began releasing records again in 2008. Their 2012 record "Hot Wire" included songs inspired by New Orleans Funk. This record led to a successful tour including an appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Breakthrough

A couple of years after they formed Hue and Cry, the Kane brothers released their debut single "Here Comes Everybody" on the small independent label Stampede. This contributed to their opportunity to sign with the Virgin Records subsidiary, Circa, in 1986. Shortly after they released the single "I Refuse" and in 1987 their hit song "Labour of love" reached number 6 in the U.K. charts.

Hit Albums

Hue and Cry's debut album "Seduced and Abandoned" was released in 1987; it charted well, reaching number 22 in the U.K. In 1988 they released the follow up album "Remote", which included the chart hit "Looking for Linda". The album did well in the U.K. charts and it was re-released in 1989 as a double-album that also included live recordings of the songs. In 1989 they released "Bitter Suite" which achieved platinum status in the U.K. Over the next few years, the Kanes experimented with different influences including folk and country. Hue and Cry continued to record through the 1990s. Since they reformed after a brief hiatus, they have released albums including Open Soul (2008), Bitter Sweet, Again (2010) and A's & B's (2012).

Show Experience

Many of this Scottish duos' shows feature an 8-piece back up band, which adds lots of drama and flare to their classic hits. Hue and Cry has a huge back catalogue to draw from, almost 20 albums, so their shows feature a wide range of material from the 1980s to the present. Though many years have passed since the band got started, Pat Kane is still an energetic performer who lights up a stage. His voice is powerful and he creates a lively atmosphere as he interacts with band mates and the audience.
