Trivia
Liam Ó Maonlaí and Fiachna Ó Braonáin met at a Gaelscoil, an Irish speaking school. Both men are fluent Irish Gaelic speakers. They learned to play traditional Irish music with instruments including the bouzouki, mandolin, tin whistle and bodhrán.
Band
In 1985, childhood friends Liam Ó Maonlaí (vocals, keyboard) and Fiachna Ó Braonáin (guitar) formed a duo called The Incomparable Benzini Brothers. Most of their performances involved busking in Dublin, which had a health street music scene at the time. Soon after, they changed their names to Hothouse Flowers and added some new members to the group: Peter O'Toole (bass), Leo Barnes (saxophone), and Jerry Fehily (drummer). The group began writing songs and developed a sound that combined influences from rock, gospel, and Irish traditional music. They toured Ireland and attracted the attention of Rolling Stone, who dubbed them 'the hottest unsigned band in Europe'. A 1986 performance on television attracted the attention of U2 lead singer Bono, who reached out to the band with his advice. This led to the release of their first single, 'Love Don't Work This Way', on the label Mother, which had been founded by U2 in 1983. In 1992, the band teamed up with Def Leppard under the name The Acoustic Hippies From Hell to record three covers, which became B-sides to Def Leppard singles. After a heavy touring schedule in 1993, the band took a hiatus. In 1998, they reunited and released their fourth album, 'Born'. This record had a more rock-influenced sound than their earlier records and featured songs like 'You can Love Me Now'. Hothouse Flowers' current members are Fiachna Ó Braonáin, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Peter O'Toole, and Dave Clarke.
Breakthrough
After connecting with U2's Bono, Hot House Flowers found success quickly. In 1988, they released their debut album, 'People', which was one of the most successful debuts of any Irish band up to that point. The record has an epic bluesy feel and reached #1 on the Irish charts in its first week, and #2 on the UK charts shortly after. It included hit singles like 'Feet on the Ground' and their iconic song 'Don't Go'.
Hit Albums
Hothouse Flowers second album, 'Home', was most successful in Australia. It includes the singles 'Give it Up' and 'I Can See Clearly Now', a Johnny Nash cover. Their 1993 album, 'Songs From the Rain', attracted praise from critics, and did well in Ireland and Australia. Their 2004 album, 'Into Your Heart', featured the single 'Your Love Goes On', which did well on the Irish charts.
Show Experience
Hothouse Flowers are energetic live performers with lots of personality. They also love to jam, so audiences will sometimes be surprised by extended performances of the band's favourite songs. Live shows feature new songs and beloved music from their back catalogue as well as unique covers of Irish traditional songs. They generally perform at standing venues like rock clubs or festivals, so expect a relaxed atmosphere.
