The Dresden Dolls - Eclectic Duo Announce First Live Dates in Five Years
Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione have announced their first live performances for more than five years in the US for summer 2016, giving UK fans hope that they'll perform on this side of the pond soon too. The legendary alternative cabaret duo reunite for what promises to be an extravagant show of brilliant music, spectacular effects, special guests and - best of all - new material. Since their last album Yes, Virginia... came out in 2006, they've effectively been on hiatus, but Palmer and Viglione are excited to be back after each enjoying individual success. The Dresden Dolls Biography - Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione Return
Describing themselves as 'Brechtian punk cabaret', this talented pair led the way in the underground movement that started gaining significant popularity in the early '00s. Donning dramatic make-up and alternative clothing, they chose their name partly based on Weimar Germany and its cabaret culture. It also effectively portrayed the style of their music, which is often a clash between the soft and harsh. A debut self-titled record came out in 2003, with singles like 'Girl Anachronism', 'Coin-Operated Boy' and 'Good Day' showing outstanding drama and lyrical depth. Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione are mesmeric live performers, both highly animated while playing piano and percussion respectively, and their stage act has often welcomed cameos from circus acts like stilt walkers and fire breathers.
Second album Yes, Virginia... came out in 2006, backed by singles 'Sing', 'Backstabber' and 'Shores of California', and led to the band securing slots at festivals including Leeds and Reading, South by Southwest and Lollapalooza. Though the duo were at the height of their fame, a hiatus followed to allow Palmer and Viglione to focus on separate projects. Palmer found success with album Who Killed Amanda Palmer, whilst Viglione toured with numerous Boston-based bands including HUMANWINE. Other than a brief reunion in 2007 to celebrate compilation album No Virginia..., and a second reformation and concert run in 2010, the past decade has been very quiet for the band. Still, with US dates announced for 2016, there's hope for the same for UK fans. Don't miss out - get The Dresden Dolls tickets on StubHub.
