Deftones Biography - The Alternative Titans

Sacramento childhood friends Chino Moreno, Abe Cunningham and Stephen Carpenter had a pretty unusual reason for deciding to start a band. Carpenter learned to play the electric guitar after being injured in a car accident and restricted to a wheelchair, and with Cunningham already a talented percussionist, Moreno took lead vocals by default. Fortunately, he proved a pretty great singer. The trio recruited bassist Chi Cheng, and promptly went about establishing a fan base locally, regularly performing alongside fellow local heroes Korn. Their first album, Adrenaline, came out in 1995, followed up by Around the Fur and White Pony in 1997 and 2000 respectively. All three records went platinum.

Adding Frank Delgado on keyboards and turntables, the group brought out an eponymous LP in 2003, then Saturday Night Wrist in 2006, but two years later, tragedy struck. Cheng passed away after complications suffered from a car crash, and after a period of mourning, the remaining members made the difficult decision to carry on with the band. After recruiting bassist Sergio Vega, the band released their latest opus, Gore, stating that the LP is perhaps their most ambitious to date. The album received universal acclaim and broke into the top five in both the UK and the US, cementing the band's status as the titans of modern metal music.
