Deep Purple: 20 albums, record sales of 100 million, and an enviable musical legacy
Forming in 1968, Deep Purple found success in America before their breakthrough in their home country, with debut single "Hush" immediately breaking the top five of the Billboard 200, and their first fourteen albums charting in the US.
They were four LPs in before they achieved a top five record in the UK, with 1972 album Machine Head finally earning the band their first hit on both sides of the Atlantic, fuelled by singles "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star".
20 albums, record sales of over 100 million, a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a revolving door of members have followed over the proceeding 35 years, with few bands boasting such an impressive legacy.
