Wicked's origins

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire which, in turn, takes inspiration from L. Frank Baum's children's classic The Wizard of Oz, this spellbinding production tells the untold story of the world's most famous fictional witches. First opening at London Victoria's Apollo Theatre in 2006, the musical has been seen by over eight million people and is now one of the longest-running shows in the West End.

Beginning with the dying scene of the Wicked Witch of the West from the original Wizard of Oz, Good Witch of the South Glinda ruminates on the "actual" events that led up to her Wicked counterpart's death, starting with her sister Nessarose's enrolment into Shiz University. Elphaba's unusual appearance causes her to be shunned by the fellow students until she strikes up an unexpected friendship with her roommate Glinda. As the musical pans out, audiences come to realise that the events of The Wizard of Oz may not have been as they seemed and find themselves left in awe as a more complex tale emerges.
