Violent Femmes Biography - Retuning to the Spotlight
The band was founded by Brian Ritchie (bass) and drummer Victor DeLorenzo in the early 1980s in Wisconsin, with singer Gordon Gano joining shortly afterwards. They got their break supporting The Pretenders in 1981, with their debut, self-titled album proving an instant underground hit shortly afterwards. Following a more mainstream sound in the mid-1980s they earned a whole new audience, although they briefly disbanded at that point, reconvening in 1988 with the album 3. DeLorenzo was replaced by drummer Guy Hoffman in 1993, with the band releasing five albums with Hoffman on the kit.
Having been largely inactive since 2007, the band delighted fans in 2013 by announcing their reunion. Initially booked for the Coachella festival in the US, it went so well that they have slingshot their career into 2014.
