Tool Biography - Pledging War Against Censorship

The band was the brainchild of guitarist Adam Jones who insisted on forming band after hearing Keenan's voice on a track from his former group. Following two years of local performances the group signed with the Zoo Entertainment label and released their debut EP Opiate. After touring alongside Rage Against the Machine the band released their full length debut Undertow, which was not only more varied in style but also rocketed to platinum status during the alt rock group's peak, driven by signature song 'Sober''s iconic stop motion video. Their 2001 release Lateralus proved to be their most successful effort yet, peaking at Number One in the US Billboard 200 within the first week.

Known for the controversial subject matter of their songs and their war against censorship, the group have more often than not surprised their fans with hoaxes and pranks, adding a further element of mystery to their music. Keenan's powerful, wailing vocals ring out over fuzzy guitars and drum crashes to produce a suitably dark sound that's seen the group become firm fan favourites.
