The Blackbyrds Tickets
"The Blackbyrds Tickets
For fans of disco and jazz, The Blackbyrds were one of the most important groups of the 1970s. Post-bop trumpeter Donald Byrd formed them and produced the five-piece group over the course of seven seminal studio albums between 1974 and 1980. The mix of funk, soul and dance floor pop was revived in 2012 by Keith Kilgo for live touring and was ecstatically received by fans of the legendary band, who declared it to be as good as the original line-up. Blackbyrds tickets are quickly snapped up by old fans and new converts alike.
Schedule
The Blackbyrds are touring on an annual basis, with their latest tour covering venues across North America and Europe, including a tour of the UK. The Blackbyrds begin the tour in the UK, performing at Band on the Wall in Manchester before calling at Under The Bridge in Fulham. From there, they are due to hit the capital cities of continental Europe, with dates in Rotterdam, Paris, Vienna, Stockholm and Copenhagen planned. The band are also due to play a date in Detroit, Michigan, at the end of the tour.
Trivia
The Blackbyrds were in demand as support artists for some of the biggest names of the R&B and soul scene during the seventies. They toured with legends such as Mandril, Roberta Flack and B.B. King. They also found a second wave of fans during the seventies due to the sampling of some of their most popular songs on hip hop records. Throughout the eighties, the band were also staples of the underground club classics scene. Founder member Barney Perry developed his own Solar Sound imprint and released a well-regarded solo record under the pseudonym Blair.
Band
The original band members were all selected from Howard University's music department, where Donald Byrd was an instructor. The original members consisted of Byrd, drummer Keith Kilgo, guitarist Barney Perry, bassist Joe Hall, percussionist Pericles "Perk' Jacobs, Jr., reeder Allan Barnes, pianist Kevin Toney, guitarist Orville Saunders and saxophonist Steve Johnson. Kilgo, Saunders and Hall are still current touring members.
Breakthrough
The Blackbyrds were instantly popular amongst jazz and disco enthusiasts, with their first two records selling solidly, but it was their 1975 hit "Walking in Rhythm" that truly defines the band. The song was a hit with soft-rock stations and charted on both sides of the Atlantic. After selling over one million copies within two months, it received a gold disc and was nominated for a Grammy.
Hit Albums
The Blackbyrds released their eponymous debut album in 1973 and instantly found a wide audience. The run of albums until the groups early '80s dissolution - "Flying Start," "City Life," "Unfinished Business," "Action and Better Days" - also performed strongly in the charts. Their many compilations sold well, with "Greatest Hits" taking advantage of the advent of CDs to become their biggest seller.
Show Experience
One thing that can always be guaranteed at a Blackbyrds concert is that the dance floor will be full. With their best known hits, such as "Walking in Rhythm," "Rock Creek Park" and "Happy Music" usually prominent in the setlist, gigs take on a party atmosphere with the audience on their feet and dancing and charismatic drummer Keith Kilgo chatting to the crowd and commanding their attention.
