The club was first established in 1920 under the name of Athleta. In the first few years of its life, it changed its name first to Spartaan and then to v.v. Heerenveen. Throughout its long history, SC Heerenveen has counted a number of talented players who have become a part of the club’s legacy. One of these players – and perhaps the most renowned of them all – is Abe Lenstra, who is considered one of the best Dutch footballers of all time and played with SC Heerenveen from 1936 to 1954.
