Ride: from Nowhere to everywhere!

Founded in Oxford by Andy Bell, Mark Gardener, Laurance Colbert, and Steve Queralt, Ride first performed together in 1988 after being inspired, like many bands of the time, by The Smiths. The band put on small gigs around the town of Banbury and recorded demos in their family homes, but got their first break when another band cancelled at the Local Support live music night and the quartet were given their chance to perform. Growing interest led to a record deal in 1989 and a number of EPs in 1990, the year ending with their debut album "Nowhere" being released to huge popularity. To this day it is one of the most important albums in the British alternative music industry and has gone down in history as a defining moment in the shoegaze scene—a subgenre characterised by experimental and obscure reinterpretations of traditional guitar music. The sound of shoegaze

The release of "Nowhere" made the band into an international success, celebrated as one of the brightest new bands of the 1990s and touring with sold-out shows around the world. Later albums such as "Going Blank Again" (1992), "Carnival of Light" (1994), and "Tarantula" (1996) saw the band develop their sound, however, by the latter album it was clear that internal tensions were heightening and the group broke up around 1996. The members pursued a number of solo projects, but over the years interest remained in Ride as fans missed their fresh sound and a new generation discovered their innovative approach to indie rock. In 2014, news that the band had reunited was met with huge popularity and they went on to perform on some of the world’s biggest festival stages including Primavera Sound and Coachella Music Festival. The reunion was accompanied by albums "Weather Diaries" (2017) and "This Is Not a Safe Place" (2019), showing that the group had certainly not lost their ability to push the sound of guitar music forward.
