Born in Brooklyn in the early 1970s, Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones is the son of the revered jazz musician Olu Dara. Music played a bit part in his life from the beginning, with both family and close friends being involved in the music industry, and Jones himself playing the trumpet and writing lyrical rhymes from a very young age. As a teenager, Nasty Nas - as he was then known - collaborated with close friends and local rappers to record albums as well as his own material. His big break came in 1991 when he caught the attention of the music industry after performing on Main Source's track Live at the Barbeque. The following year, he secured a record deal with Colombia Records and the hip hop community were instantly hooked. His 2012 album Life is Good marked yet another landmark in his illustrious career - not only was it his first solo release in four years, but it also scored the rapper his fifth number one on the Billboard album charts and marked his last release with Def Jam Records.
