Melanie Martinez Biography - The Voice Star Releases Debut Cry Baby

After competing in US TV talent show The Voice, this aspiring artist is already making her mark in the alternative music scene. Born in Long Island, New York, the singer starting writing her own music from a young age, favouring a style that straddles the line between electronica, hip-hop and traditional folk. Whilst still in high school, in 2012, she auditioned for the show with an original and intriguing version of Britney Spears' 'Toxic', impressing the judges with a slower, acoustic performance. Taking on songs from Ellie Goulding's 'Lights' to 'Seven Nation Army' by the White Stripes, she sailed through to the live shows and the latter track reached the top ten in the iTunes chart.

After her eventual elimination, she began working on her own original material - and the results were staggering. Debut single 'Dollhouse' came out in 2014 and was a YouTube sensation, quickly gaining millions of views. After signing to Atlantic Records she headed out on tour, testing out more tracks live, before releasing her debut EP Dollhouse in May the same year. A year on she began dropping tracks from the upcoming album, such as 'Pity Party' and 'Soap', again receiving positive feedback from press and fans. The album itself, Cry Baby, shot to the number six spot in the Billboard 200 in August 2015, and proved well worth the wait.
