Developing a dedicated metal fanbase

Auburn, New York, was not a place that was ready for the birth of Manowar. The band formed in 1980 when bassist Joey DeMaio met guitarist Ross the Boss whilst working with Black Sabbath as a bass tech and fireworks engineer respectively. The pair became close friends through shared musical interests and decided to form a band, bringing in vocalist Eric Adams, an ex-classmate of DeMaio, soon after. Their first demo earned the attention of Liberty Records, under which the band's first album, Battle Hyms, was released, featuring iconic actor and director Orson Welles as the narrator on the track Dark Avenger. This initial success gained them a support slot for old school rocker Ted Nugent, as well as an increasing popularity in Europe, particularly the UK and Germany. The band had planned a huge tour of the UK after the release of sophomore effort Into Glory Ride, but it had to be cancelled. To apologise, Manowar dedicated their following album, Hail to England, to the country and its fans. Loyal as ever, Manowar are still kicking ass and rocking hard as hell to this day, maintaining a committed cult following dedicated to the survival of true heavy metal. Metal's not metal when it's not LOUD!

Famed for fantastical lyrics of swords and sorcery based on Norse and Greco-Roman mythology, Manowar furthers its uniqueness in its visual style, presenting long-haired warrior-like characters complete with armour and leather like something out of a Neil Gaiman novel. They're also known for being loud. Really, really loud. In fact, they hold the record for the loudest ever performance, a heavily contested title by bands such as Gallows, who claim to have broken Manowar's record, as well as modern electronic artists.
