Johnny Marr - Musical Maestro Behind The Smiths� Sound
The Smiths was formed in Manchester in 1982 by writer and singer Steven Patrick Morrissey � later to be known as simply 'Morrissey'. Morrissey took care of the lyrics, quickly establishing his own sardonic and darkly comic style, whilst the guitarist came up with the subtle-yet-infectious hooks and driving melodies.
Signing to alternative independent label Rough Trade Records, The Smiths picked up John Peel as an early advocate, helping to propel them to commercial success with their first album, The Smiths.
Looking back, The Smiths� success isn�t difficult to understand. Morrissey was a romantic dandy-figurehead, swinging handfuls of gladioli around the stage and penning razor sharp lyrics full of haunted humour and wistful contemplation. Meanwhile his partner in crime was crafting subtle licks and pop-sized hooks, forming the musical backbone of all The Smiths� songs.
The Smiths disbanded in 1987, and in recent years the musician has worked with everyone from Paul McCartney to The Pretenders, including stints with The Cribs and Modest Mouse. He also collaborated with film score composer on work for Christopher Nolan�s 2010 film Inception and recently released album Playland.
