Heracles Almelo was formed in 1903 in the eastern Netherlands city of Almelo. It was named after Heracles (often known in the West as Hercules), a hero of Greek mythology who incorporated great strength and also divine character, being the son of Zeus. Perhaps this name gave the club confidence because they went on to win the Netherlands' premier division in 1927 and 1941. Yet a long fallow period followed, in which the Heracles Almelo squad enjoyed success in the Eerste Divisie but couldn't reach a higher level. 2005 changed all that, however, when the club blasted back into the Eredivisie and, just over ten years later, even qualified for European football's 2016-2017 season. As the team has enjoyed more and more success, the number of Heracles Almelo fans has grown exponentially. Fortunately - to avoid any bad associations - the club's first KNVB Beker final, which it lost to PSV Eindhoven, was held in the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam instead. The club's traditional rivals are FC Twente, but Heracles Almelo players have also managed to beat heavyweights such as FC Groningen and FC Utrecht in recent years, proving that they are indeed strong contenders worthy of a place in the highest echelons of Dutch football. Besides skill on the pitch, Heracles Almelo is known for being the first football club in the Netherlands to have employed a black player - South African Steve Mokone was signed in 1958. Other footballers who have been proud to wear a Heracles Almelo jersey have included Everton Ramos da Silva, Roy Friend and Wout Weghorst.
