The Georgia international team were granted World Rugby status in 1992, just a year after the country declared its independence from Russia. By the turn of the century they had become one of the best second-tier rugby nations on the continent, winning the European Nations Cup in 2001 before qualifying for the 2003 Rugby World Cup in a fiercely-contested play off against Russia. Four years later they enjoyed their first finals victory with a 30-0 defeat of Namibia Rugby, and in 2011 they achieved a second with a 35-9 win over Romania Rugby. Georgia then won two matches at the same tournament for the first time in 2015 to finish third and guarantee qualification for 2019. In 2018 the team, which largely consisted of players who play their trade in the French leagues, once again cemented their status as the dominant force in the Nations Cup by lifting the trophy for the tenth time. Lelo, Lelo, Sakartvelo (Try, Try, Georgia)

Nicknamed The Lelos, the Georgian rugby side typically play their home games at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium, a 27,000-capacity multi-purpose venue also used for the country's international rugby league and football teams. Fans who attend the stadium, named after the Georgian footballer, should look forward to an exciting game featuring the familiar chants of "Lelo, Lelo, Sakartvelo" (Try, Try, Georgia) and some of the best players outside the elite. Several internationals have earned more than 100 caps for their country including Merab Kvirikashvili, Davit Kacharava and Giorgi Chkhaidze. Other notable players have included Mamuka Gorgodze, the flanker once hailed by L'Equipe as the finest foreigner playing in the French leagues, long-running captain Ilia Zedginidze and Malkhaz Urjukashvili, who at just 17 years old became one of the youngest ever players to compete for his country.
