Four Tops - Announce 2016 UK Tour With The Temptations
Back in the '60s this vocal quartet helped to define Motown and are still enjoying a fruitful career over 50 years later. Original frontman Levi Stubbs lent his deep, soulful voice to number one hits including 'I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)' and 'Reach Out I'll Be There'. The group's decision to be led by a baritone - as opposed to the tenors that were popular at the time - helped them stand out among their contemporaries, and they enjoyed more than 30 years of success together. The sad passing of two of their founding members saw a change of line-up, and Abdul 'Duke' Fakir remains the sole original member. The legacy of the group still continues, and 2016 will see them join forces with The Temptations for a full UK tour. See the legends at work and get Four Tops tickets from StubHub.
Four Tops Biography - Legends of Motown to Come to the UK
Meeting as high school students in Detroit, Levi Stubbs, Abdul 'Duke' Fakir, Renaldo 'Obie' Benson and Lawrence Payton spent the late '50s touring and developing their act before they were spotted by Motown Record Corporation founder Berry Gordy Jr. Signed to his growing company, they began their career singing backup harmonies for fellow artists like The Supremes and Martha & the Vandellas before an instrumental track proved just the inspiration they needed to create their first bit hit. 'Baby I Need Your Loving' shot up the charts upon its release and helped the band transition from their jazz roots to a more commercial soul sound. In 1965, they scored a first number one hit with 'I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)', prompting a string of further chart hits over the next decade.
'Reach Out I'll Be There' came out in 1966, hitting the number one spot in both the UK and US and is today one of the best loved examples of the Motown sound. The band were at their creative peak, consistently wowing audiences across the world with their slick live performances and impeccable vocal talents, and making history with their groundbreaking recordings. Indeed, they were credited with defining the Motown style in their use of melody and call-and-response lyrics, illustrating their incredible legacy. However, when the genre began to change in the early '70s, the band switched to ABC Records to forge ahead with a more pop orientated sound, with top ten hit 'Keeper of the Castle' an early highlight. They found it difficult to replicate their past success though, with only a few minor hits to their names, and took a break from music. In 1980, they reignited their careers by signing with Motown once again, and toured to sell-out crowds until the turn of the millennium. It was at this point that Stubbs was diagnosed with cancer and found himself unable to perform, and when he and Benson passed away, Fakir was left as the only remaining original member. With Ronnie McNeir, Lawrence Payton Jr and Harold Bonhart, he and the band's new line-up remain fantastic in concert. In October 2016, they head out on a UK tour alongside the Temptations to play all of the group's greatest hits. Get your Four Tops tickets today on StubHub to experience a piece of music history.
