No fan of 90s pop needs any introduction to Crowded House: their gentle and jangly songs have become sentimental anthems of an entire generation and their appeal has only continued as the years have rolled on. The years have been kind to their music too – it sounds every bit as fresh today as it did then, and could easily have come from one of the many famous indie bands of the new millennium. This is one of the most iconic pop bands of the late twentieth century, their quirky lyrics and incredible ears for melody having made them international superstars. Some of the best pop of a decade
Crowded House was formed from the remnants of wacky New Zealand new-wave band Split Enz. Led by the Finn brothers, Neil Finn and Tim Finn, they began producing album after album of mellifluous acoustic pop music in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. Songs like "Better Be Home Soon" and "Into Temptation" topped the pop charts across the world, and they soon become international superstars. They had an uncanny way of pulling incredibly harmonious choruses seemingly out of nowhere and wrote what some have described as the most beautiful pop music songs of the decade. Their songs were even adopted by TV weather stations, as in the case of the earworm that was "Weather With You". The brothers settled in Melbourne, the hotbed of Australian music, and recruited a band of musicians that shared their infectious off-the-wall sense of humour, finding a particular kindred spirit in the sadly departed drummer Paul Hester. Together they made some of the most classic pop albums of all time, and their live performances are masterclasses of pop entertainment, as you can find out with your own Crowded House tickets.
One of the big three of Aussie rock and pop
Crowded House were one of the big three Australian bands of the time that broke through on a massive scale internationally and put modern Australian rock and pop firmly on the map again. In previous decades the continent had produced the likes of The Easybeats and John Paul Young, but it had been a while since a truly international superstar band had emerged from Down Under. Enter, in quick succession, INXS, Midnight Oil and, of course, Crowded House. Between them they were to appear in the charts from the USA to Europe and Japan many times over, winning fans across the world in huge droves. Latterly they still tour and perform, so you can still get Crowded House tickets on StubHub. You should also look out for tickets for two other outfits as well: Neil Finn joined Fleetwood Mac in 2018 when Lindsey Buckingham left, and he also performs with his son as Neil and Liam Finn.
