Having graduated from Trinity College Dublin, the Argentinian-born musician signed his first contract with AandM Records in 1974 and took a support slot on Supertramp's 'Crime of the Century Tour', before releasing his debut album Far Beyond These Castle Walls a year later. This album boasted the single 'Flying' that'd go on to spend an incredible 17 weeks at No.1 in Brazil, though it notably would not chart in the UK. For that he'd have to wait until 1981, where he'd make his mark with compilation of his earlier work titled Best Moves. The following year he'd repeat the feat with The Getaway, featuring lead single 'Don't Pay the Ferryman', and again with its follow-up Man on The Line.

1986's 'The Lady In Red' would unquestionably become the singer-songwriter's high point, becoming a No.1 hit in the UK and a No.3 hit across the Atlantic. This still often-played single came from the album Into The Light, a record that would fall just short of topping the UK album charts. Whilst this success would be impossible to match with his latter material, the singer's consistency since then in the quality of his recordings has maintained his popularity across the world, as have his entertaining live shows.
