Horse Racing at Cheltenham Racecourse - Home of Steeplechasing

The first organised flat race meeting at this celebrated location took place 1815 on Nottingham Hill. Its racing scene thrived until a local parish priest began to preach of the evils of horse racing, leading those with negative attitudes towards the sport to disrupt a race meet in 1830 and burn the grandstand to the ground, forcing the races to move to its current location of Prestbury Park.

In its new location the racecourse thrived and now holds its annual four day festival in March. Having become an important highlight of the racing calendar, it sees a throng of keen racing enthusiasts descending upon the sporting venue every March. With a capacity of 67,500, the racecourse attracts over 700,000 visitors across the year to see the finest horses in racing battle it out on their various racecourses. The course is infamous for its connections with steeplechasing and is home to its Hall of Fame, in addition to playing host to the Greenbelt and Wychwood Music Festivals.
