Born in North London to a Pakistani father and British mother, the singer developed a love of music from an early age, skipping school to listen to Nirvana and playing improvised pieces on the piano to channel her emotions. Her instinctive musical ability was honed further by attending the University of Brighton, where she studied music and visual arts. After graduation she began to seriously pursue a career in music, releasing her debut album Fur and Gold in 2006. A record label change resulted in a 2007 re-release with additional tracks, helping the collection sell over 60,000 copies and drawing comparisons to talents such as Kate Bush and Annie Lennox. Two Suns followed in 2009, detailing the journey of an alter-ego named Pearl. Her profile was further raised when lead single 'Daniel' won an Ivor for Best Contemporary Song.
