Shaking up the Buenos Aires music scene

Born in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires in 1961, Calamaros quickly made an impression on the music scene of the city as a studio guest musician on an album by the band Raíces at the age of just 17. Not long after, he formed his first band, the Elmer Band, who went on to release the now cult hit Tristeza de la Ciudad. Upon one of the many reincarnations of legendary new wave group Los Abuelos de la Nada, led by the much-celebrated singer Miguel Abuelo, Calamaros was invited to play keys. They were a huge success, and Calamaros was a huge part of it, writing many of the band's hits, such as Costumbres Argentinas, Sin gamulán and Mil horas. His first solo album came in 1984, before the fall of Los Abuelos de la Nada. Two more records followed before Calamaros began producing for the likes of ska band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and solo artist Fabiana Cantilo, both incredibly successful in the Americas. Still early on in his career, Andrés Calamaro was making a significant name for himself, and more was yet to come. Los Rodríguez and an endless creativity

Calamaro later moved to Spain due to the economic situation in his home country and formed a new band, Los Rodríguez, with Ariel Rot and Julián Infante, members of the successful Madrid-based rock band Tequila. Los Rodríguez earned critical acclaim with their three studio albums, although 1993's Sin Documentos gained international attention with its original fusion of rock, flamenco and Latin rhythms. After a greatest hits release, the band dissolved and Calamaros embarked on another run as a solo artist and built up an extensive catalogue of well over 100 songs ready for the world to listen to. In 2000, he brought out El Salmón, a five-CD epic featuring 103 songs. As well as an accomplished guitarist and vocalist, Calamaro also toys around with the Flute, Violin, Double Bass, Arpa, Drums and the all-important Bandoneon, an essential component of Argentine tango music.
