Alice in Chains: sound of a generation
Emerging as part of the popular Seattle guitar scene of the 1990s alongside the likes of Nirvana and Soundgarden, Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley formed the first incarnation of the band in high school under the name Alice 'N' Chains. The band as we have come to know it fully formed in 1987 and released a demo a year later, entitled The Treehouse Tapes. The EP impressed Columbia Records, who promptly signed the band in 1989.
It wasn't until 1992 that the group experienced their first taste of major success with the release of hit album Dirt. The critically acclaimed record was an enormous success, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200 and spawning five Top 30 singles such as "Would?" and "Them Bones". 1994 then saw the release of Alice in Chains' second acoustic EP, Jar of Flies. The record was another huge success; entering the Billboard 200 at number one and becoming the first EP in history to debut at the top of the chart.
In 1995, the band released their self-titled third album, which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and put the band on top of the world. However, the success was releatively short lived as Staley's personal problems began to take their toll on the group. After he sadly passed away in 2002, the band soldiered on but did not release a record for almost 15 years.
In 2009, they came back with a bang, winning the Kerrang! Icon Award and releasing the practically universally acclaimed Black Gives Way to Blue. Following it up with the equally lauded The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here in 2013, the band nowq boast list record sales of 25 million worldwide, over 20 Top 40 singles and nine Grammy award nominations.
