A historic rugby union nation
Uruguayans were first introduced to the sport of rugby union by a wave of British immigrants in the mid-19th Century, and as a result boosted one of the game's oldest cultures. The country made its international debut against Chile in 1948 and shortly after finished runner-up in the inaugural South American Rugby Championship. The team established themselves as the second-best team on the continent behind Argentina Rugby over the following decades with regular victories over Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. They then announced their arrival on the global stage when they beat Spain in their first ever Rugby World Cup campaign in 1999 and then Georgia in their second four years later. After winning the South American Rugby Championships in 2009 and 2013, Los Teros returned to Rugby World Cup action in 2015 thanks to a 57-49 aggregate win against Russia Rugby and confirmed their place in 2019 with a two-leg play-off victory over Canada. An intense home atmosphere
Uruguay play their home games at Estadio Charrúa in the capital city of Montevideo. Built in 1984, the 14,000-capacity venue received a major upgrade in 2006, and is now also the home of the country's women's football team. The stadium creates an incredible atmosphere at every game, but is particularly intense when Uruguay's fiercest rivals, and thorn in their side, Argentina, come to town. Uruguay have struggled to beat their fellow South Americans over the last century, and the roar of the home crowd as they go on to break the curse is an experience not to be missed. Players to have pulled on the blue and white strip over the years include Diego Magno, Rodrigo Sanchez and Carlos Arboleya, who have all amassed more than 60 caps each, record-breaking try scorer Diego Ormaechea and French league regulars Franco Lamanna, Agustin Ormaechea and Felipe Berchesi.
