The Stone Roses Biography

After the demise of Manchester-based band English Rose, school friends Ian Brown and John Squire decided to persevere in music, recruiting Alan John Wren, Andy Couzens and Pete Garner to create a new group blending '60s guitar pop and the heavier sounds of the '80s. Playing warehouses in and around the city, they started to accumulate a following and added Gary Mounfield to the line-up as a second guitarist. They released three singles in quick succession, with the most notable being "Elephant Stone", which innovatively combined rock with the growing acid house scene and set the tone for what would become a signature sound. By 1989 they had taken the UK by storm, playing huge gigs and receiving rave reviews, and their self-titled debut album arrived the same year. Singles "She Bangs the Drums" and "Fools Gold" brought further commercial recognition, before "One Love" hit number four in the UK singles chart to give them their highest ever chart placement.

Future recordings were delayed following a legal battle with the band's record label, meaning work on the second album didn't begin until 1993. Second Coming came out the following year, displaying a heavier blues rock sound than previous work and received mixed reviews. Whilst a tour was planned, the departure of John Squire saw the eventual disbandment of the group in 1996. After 15 years apart though, the band announced an extensive reunion tour for 2012, which included three key homecoming dates at Manchester's Heaton Park. Four years on, and with a successful string of gigs in 2016 under their belts along with the release of "All for One" and "Beautiful Thing", further shows have been announced for 2017.
