The Cat Empire: two decades in the business for ever-evolving sextet

Aussie band The Cat Empire formed around the turn of the millennium, initially as a three piece. Felix Riebl, Ollie McGill and Ryan Monroe fused ska, rock, soul and jazz genres, with the result a highly original and fresh sound that still proudly wears its influences on its sleeve. By 2001, Harry James Angus, Will Hull-Brown and Jamshid Khadiwhala had joined to play trumpet, drums and turntables respectively, and the troupe began to work on a debut album.

The self-titled work was released in 2003, with early single "Hello" quickly gaining considerable airplay in their home country and the UK. Second LP Two Shoes followed in 2005, with tracks "Sly" and "The Car Song" further illustrating their crossover appeal. The following year, the sextet was chosen to perform at the opening ceremony of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games; which proved to be a massive boost to the band's international profile. Soon they were featuring on the immensely popular late night chat shows of America, performing at Glastonbury in the UK, and recruiting backing musicians and dancers for their increasingly elaborate shows. Cities, So Many Nights and Cinema showed a group unwilling to compromise their creative vision, 2013 record Steal the Light proved their single vision was a rare and brilliant attribute, before 2016's international success Rising with the Sun received some of the best critical reviews of the band's two-decade career so far.
