UK Championship Snooker: one of snooker's top events returns to York in November 2019

First held in 1977, the UK Championship is one of snooker's longest running and most prestigious tournaments. Along with the World Championship and The Masters it is one of the sport's Triple Crown events and, as the sport's second biggest ranking tournament, one of the most coveted trophies in snooker. 

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Steve Davis jointly hold the record for the most UK titles, having won the tournament six times each. Stephen Hendry won five titles, while Mark Williams, Mark Selby, Ding Junhui and Neil Robertson have all won two. O'Sullivan's nearest rival among those still playing is John Higgins, who has won the UK Championship three times.

UK Championship Snooker: more triple crown success for O'Sullivan

First held  in Tower Circus, Blackpool in 1977, the UK Championship was open only to British residents and passport holders. Irishman Patsy Fagan won the inaugural tournament by defeating Doug Mountjoy and, the following year, the event moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, where it remained until 1997.

The rules were changed in 1984, as the tournament was granted ranking status and all professionals allowed to enter. Steve Davis beat Alex Higgins that year – for the first of four consecutive titles – having lost to Higgins 16-15 in 1983. Stephen Hendry's 1989 and 1990 wins were the beginning of a decade of utter dominance as he defeated Steve Davis (the giant of the 80s) in two consecutive finals. 

In 1993, Ronnie O'Sullivan became the youngest-ever winner of the tournament (and any ranking tournament) aged just 17. O'Sullivan then beat Hendry in 1997 and thrashed Ken Doherty 10-1 in 2001. At the other end of the age scale, the 2005 tournament saw Steve Davis, aged 48, reach his first Triple Crown final for 15 years and make his highest break in tournament play for 23 years. In a match that featured the widest age gap between finalists in professional tournament history, he lost 6–10 to the 18-year-old Ding Junhui.

The current champion is Ronnie O'Sullivan, who equalled his hero Steve Davis's record of six UK titles by defeating Shaun Murphy 10–5 in the final. It was O'Sullivan's 31st ranking title and 18th Triple Crown title, equalling Stephen Hendry's record of most major titles. Who will be crowned champion in 2019?
