Fronted by Louise Wener, the band was formed while she was at Manchester University with fellow politics student Jon Stewart. Citing influences that included the Sundays, Nirvana, the Pixies and Hole, they decided to call the band after the Woody Allen film of the same name. Their music was always closely associated with the Britpop movement. Aside from being in the group, Louise Wener has had a career as a writer and journalist and has released several novels. Known for her outspoken opinions, she, alongside Elastica's Justine Frischmann, became a female icon during the Britpop years. Reforming in 2017, the band has performed in numerous festivals and venues around the world and continues to release albums to this day.
