Lady Antebellum: award-winning Nashville group find success outside of the USA
Lady Antebellum grew out of the fertile American country music hub of Nashville, Tennessee. Combining the talents of singer Hillary Scott, singer/guitarist Charles Kelley and guitarist Dave Haywood, the trio first got together in 2006, taking their name from the graceful and iconic pre-Civil War architecture of the American South. They attracted enough attention on the Nashville music scene to earn a record contract, and put out their first single – "Love Don't Live Here" – in September 2007. It was an immediate hit, and their first album, Lady Antebellum, went straight to the top of the Billboard country charts, ending up as a platinum-sized hit.
Hilary Scott's mother is country singer Linda Davis, who had a hit with the duet "Does He Love You" alongside Reba McEntire. In the spirit of artists backing artists, the band backed hit maker Jim Brickman for his single "Never Alone". And on the subject of hits, this time on television, Lady Antebellum's song "Just a Kiss" was prominently featured in the ABC Family hit show Pretty Little Liars.
It took until 2009 for the band to become true superstars, with the release of their single "Need You Now" off their second album Need You Now; the radio-friendly pop hit went all the way to number two on the Billboard Charts in America, entered the UK Charts at number 28 and won Grammy awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The album also took home the Grammy for Best Country Album. Need You Now also produced the hit singles "American Honey" and "Our Kind of Love", and achieved platinum status in the UK, going all the way up to number eight in the charts. Two years later, the band came out with their second hit record in a row, Own the Night, bolstered by another number one hit (and a top-100 single in the UK) in the emotional song "Just a Kiss". They followed up the success of Own the Night with a celebrated Christmas album, On This Winter's Night, in 2012.
Lady Antebellum's fifth studio album, Golden, came out in May of 2013, producing two more instant-hit singles in "Downtown" and "Goodbye Town". Golden topped both the US Billboard 200 and Top Country Album charts and the UK Country Chart, and quickly went gold in the United States. Their sixth studio album, 747, again shot to number one on the charts when it was released in September 2014, with the lead single "Bartender" becoming another crossover hit.
